Creation of Vision and Values
Our school vision was created by staff, governors, children and parents culminating in a whole school art project with a professional artist to create a school mural.
Here are some of our early ideas:
The School’s Christian Distinctiveness
St. Barnabas is Church of England School. That means it is a publicly funded school with a Christian distinctiveness, rooted in the Church of England’s traditions but serving the local community by providing an inclusive education for children of all faiths and world views. Our school vision ‘they shall soar on wings like eagles’ is from the book of Isaiah in the old testament, chosen for its relevance to all children and adults. ‘They shall soar on wings like eagles’ communicates our mission to enable all children and adults to thrive.
Spirituality in Children
Our aim is to develop children’s capacity to explore questions of meaning, purpose, and connection, often through wonder, curiosity, and reflection, and does not necessarily require a religious affiliation. For further information on spirituality at St. Barnabas, follow this link to staff training.
Collective Worship
‘Collective worship remains the relevant and essential component of an education that enables all pupils to flourish and to ‘live life in all its fullness’ John 10:10.’
Church of England Guidance for School
Collective worship at St Barnabas CE School is of a broadly Christian character and aims to be inclusive, invitational and inspiring. We welcome children and adults of all world views and aim to provide collective worship that is relevant and spiritually enriching for all.
Collective worship may take place together in the school hall, classroom or church in the form of an assembly or service, but we provide other additional opportunities for worship and spirituality such as:
- Providing opportunities for contemplation/reflection during lessons
- Prayer Spaces (BE SPACE)
- Quiet time in special spaces around the school grounds
- ‘Camp fire contemplation’ on site
- Reflective displays
- Philosophy for Children

SIAMS
The Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) is the Church of England and Methodist Church’s outworking of the requirements of section 48 of the Education Act 2005. It is a key element of the life of all Church of England and Methodist schools in England.
SIAMS inspection focuses on the impact of a Church school’s Christian vision on pupils and adults. This involves looking at the school’s Christian vision, the provision the school makes because of this vision and how effective this provision is in enabling all pupils to flourish. Church schools will employ a variety of strategies and styles appropriate to, and reflective of, their particular context in order to be distinctively and effectively Christian in their character and ethos. SIAMS inspectors therefore do not look for a set template of what a Church school should be like, but rather take the particular context of the school into account and base their evaluation on the outcomes rather than the process.
